Flagstaff, AZ

2 Chicas on Route 66

So one chicken nugget meal later, the 2 Chicas were on fire headed north. Thanks to Chica 2’s steady hand at the wheel, we safely arrived at the Embassy Suites Flagstaff. It was a welcomed sight; all three of them from Chica 1’s delirious perspective!
Chica 1 had to admit that she was too sick and too tired to do anything else, so off to bed.  So much for an adventure, of course, Chica 2 said the drive up was quite an adventure all by itself.
The Embassy Suites was a really nice choice, with loaded suites.  We had the double bed corner variety with a separate living room, nice kitchen area, luxurious bathroom, and separate double vanity area outside of the bathroom.
The bedroom is separated by a pocket door, and although the beds are to die for, the breakfast creates sweet dreams for a quick sunrise!
A hot omelet station, waffles, and other goodies make this a slam dunk in terms of a comfortable place to stay and a great free breakfast to kick off your day.  The 2 Chicas grabbed a bite to eat at Busters a little restaurant not far from the hotel.  Enough said….
Chica 2 was soundly asleep, really almost comatose. Poor Chica 1 was in the living room in so much pain, she just felt like letting out a howl like an old, broken alley cat.  After staring out into a cold, snowy parking lot, scratching her claws on the sofa, and holding her throbbing head, Chica 1 curled up and fell into an oxygen deprived sleep.
Morning always comes so the 2 Chicas hopped up, showered, and headed downstairs to a hot breakfast. With both of our tummies full and ready for a day trip adventure, we threw the cooler on the backseat and set off to explore the surrounding area.
Flagstaff is such a beautiful mountain town, but why oh why did Chica 1 have to be sick at such a high elevation?
Sometimes there is no answer, but Chica 1 let it be known that it is true misery to have a sinus infection at 14,000 feet and climbing.
Chica 2 wished she had brought a muzzle, some gloves, a bat,  a stun gun, aloe vera tissues laced with sleepy time juice, and Flagstaff's finest escorting poor, sick Chica 1 to a jail cell! It was about to get ugly....
Flagstaff is home to lots and lots of trees, Ponderosa pine trees no less.  But it also has the Lowell Observatory, Route 66, the San Francisco Peaks, a dormant volcano, and it is really close to the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
It is also a hop and a skip from Sedona which was Chica 1’s number one bucket list trip.  The old fashioned downtown took the 2 Chicas back to a forgotten time, which wasn’t all that great to begin with, but we survived.
Driving down Route 66 was funny because Chica 2 understandably did not see the big deal, she quizzically asked “Isn’t Route 66 on the side of one of the cars in the movie Cars?”
She took a picture out of the window while waiting for a train to pass. So, at least your young ‘uns can use the movie to identify  this famous road.
The 2 Chicas challenge – what’s the main line in the Route 66 song?
There are lots of kitschy tourist attractions playing on the name, but if this show or movie had meaning to you, be sure to take a drive on ….
Next stop, the 2 Chicas roll to the drugstore to obtain some much needed over the counter meds for poor little Chica 1.
Then, with a skip and a hop, a twirl, and two snaps, off we went, burning up the asphalt road to the Grand Canyon, Chica 2’s dream destination.

Northern Arizona Overview

So many people associate Arizona with the desert and the dry conditions found in Phoenix and Tucson, but the 2 Chicas know better.
Chica 1 would have the same recurring dream at some point every night for the past year that she was by the water having a spiritual encounter with God.
The desire to fulfill this dream was so strong, and on different nights, the dream would involve elements of Sedona.
So the 2 Chicas came to Arizona to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the mountains and canyons as well as to explore red rock country and get to the heart of that dream.
Of course there are so many other plusses to this beautiful state, but you’re going to have to keep reading to discover just a few of those gems!
Ok, so the 2 Chicas flew into Phoenix and began our trunk travels by getting the rental car and planning our tracks between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
After getting the car, the 2 Chicas threw our luggage in the trunk and headed to the nearest Wal-Mart.
We picked up a few snacks, purchased a cheap cooler and loaded it with our favorite non-alcoholic beverages of the moment. We then hooked up the rental car radio with a converter so it would play our mp3. Nothing like having fun and funky songs just for the road!!
Needless to say, by the time we got on the road to Flagstaff, it was beginning to get dark and Chica 1’s sinuses were flaring up like a sandstorm in a hot, musty locker room! Tee he he…. So off we go flying in our rented “chicachoces” zipping along a winding, mountainous road.
On more than one occasion, Chica 1 had difficulty deciding if the traffic on the opposite side of the road was heading at us for a horrific crash.  Just to reassure you, we were on a divided interstate highway (I-17).
This erratic behavior made my trusty co-conspirator, Chica 2, force me to pull over by pretending to be starving, as she looked over and thankfully saw the golden arches.
This particular drive was the first of a few significant hints that perhaps Chica 2 was the better long distance driver, but we will share more in later adventures.
